How This Calculator Works
The tile calculator works by finding the total area of your room and dividing it by the area of a single tile, factoring in the width of the grout lines between each tile.
The formula is: Total Area ÷ ( (Tile Width + Grout) × (Tile Length + Grout) ).
Because you cannot buy partial tiles and will inevitably need to make cuts that result in unusable pieces, we apply a standard 10% waste factor to ensure you have enough material to complete the job.
Example Calculation
For a 12x15 foot room using 12x24 inch tiles with 1/8 inch grout:
- Room Area: 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft
- Effective Tile Area: (12.125 inches × 24.125 inches) ÷ 144 = ~2.03 sq ft
- Net Tiles Needed: 180 ÷ 2.03 = 88.6 tiles
- With 10% waste: 88.6 × 1.1 = 97.4 tiles (buy 98)
Common Room Sizes & Tile Counts (10% Waste Included)
| Room Size | Square Footage | 12x12" Tiles Needed | 12x24" Tiles Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5' × 8' (Bathroom) | 40 sq ft | 44 tiles | 22 tiles |
| 10' × 10' (Kitchen) | 100 sq ft | 110 tiles | 55 tiles |
| 12' × 15' (Living Room) | 180 sq ft | 198 tiles | 99 tiles |
| 20' × 20' (Basement) | 400 sq ft | 440 tiles | 220 tiles |
