Weight of Concrete Calculator

Concrete is one of the densest and heaviest building materials on the planet. Whether you are hauling broken chunks of an old patio to the dump, designing a concrete countertop, or engineering a load-bearing structure, knowing the exact weight of the material is critical for safety.

By using our concrete weight calculator, you can quickly estimate the total tonnage of any concrete slab or structure based on its dimensions. Our concrete density calculator uses the industry standard assumption of 150 pounds per cubic foot.

How Much Does a Yard of Concrete Weigh?

Many DIYers attempt to save money on delivery fees by renting a small trailer and hauling ready-mix concrete from the plant themselves. This frequently results in blown tires, broken suspensions, and dangerous highway accidents.

Why? Because 1 cubic yard of concrete weighs approximately 4,000 pounds (2 tons).

Most standard half-ton pickup trucks (like an F-150) have a maximum payload capacity of around 1,500 to 2,000 pounds. This means a standard pickup truck cannot even safely haul a single half-yard of wet concrete. If you need more than a few wheelbarrows of concrete, always pay for professional delivery.

Cubic Foot of Concrete Weight

If a cubic yard weighs 4,050 pounds, then we know that a single cubic foot of concrete weighs roughly 150 pounds.

This is incredibly important information when pouring indoor projects, like kitchen islands. A small 2-inch thick countertop that is 3 feet wide and 6 feet long contains 3 cubic feet of concrete. Using the math above, we know that countertop will weigh 450 pounds. Your wooden kitchen cabinets must be heavily reinforced with 2x4 framing to safely support that massive dead load.

Concrete Weight FAQ

How much does a yard of concrete weigh?
A standard cubic yard of poured concrete weighs approximately 3,900 to 4,050 pounds (about 2 tons). The exact weight depends on the density of the aggregates (gravel) used in the mix.
What is the weight of 1 cubic foot of concrete?
Solid concrete is incredibly dense. One solid cubic foot of standard concrete weighs approximately 145 to 150 pounds.
How to calculate the weight of a concrete slab?
Find the total volume of your slab in cubic feet (Length in ft Width in ft Thickness in ft). Then, multiply the total cubic feet by 150 lbs to find the approximate total weight.
Is wet concrete heavier than dry concrete?
Yes. Wet concrete contains water, making it heavier. During the curing process, much of the water evaporates, causing the finished dry concrete slab to weigh slightly less than the wet mix that was originally poured.
