How to Calculate Concrete Volume

Calculating concrete volume relies on standard geometric formulas. The golden rule is to keep all of your measurement units consistent. If you are calculating in metric, ensure all lengths, widths, and depths are converted to meters before multiplying.

For a standard rectangular slab, the formula is simply Volume = Length × Width × Height. For circular columns or cylinders, you must calculate the area of the circle first using π × r² (where r is the radius, or half the diameter), and then multiply by the height. Always remember to add a 10% waste factor to your final volume to account for uneven subgrades and spillage.

Concrete Volume Formulas

Rectangle:
V = L × W × H
Cylinder:
V = π × (D ÷ 2)² × H
Hollow cylinder:
V = π × ((D_outer ÷ 2)² - (D_inner ÷ 2)²) × H
Triangle Prism:
V = 0.5 × Base × H_triangle × Length
Cube:
V = Side³

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate concrete volume in m³?

To calculate volume in cubic meters (m³), measure your length, width, and depth in meters. Then multiply them together (Length × Width × Depth = m³).

How many bags of concrete per cubic meter?

One cubic meter (1 m³) of concrete requires approximately 108 to 110 standard 20kg bags, or about 88 standard 25kg bags of pre-mixed concrete.

What is the volume of 1 cubic meter of concrete in kg?

One cubic meter (1 m³) of standard set concrete weighs approximately 2,400 kilograms (2.4 tonnes).

How do I convert cubic feet to cubic meters for concrete?

To convert cubic feet (ft³) to cubic meters (m³), divide the cubic feet by 35.3147. For example, 100 cubic feet ÷ 35.3147 = 2.83 cubic meters.
