Calculate Block Paving & Slabs

Installing a brick paver driveway or a stone slab patio is a beautiful alternative to poured concrete. Because block paving is modular, it won't crack during freeze-thaw cycles, and damaged blocks can be easily replaced.

However, buying pallets of heavy stone requires careful planning. If you run short of pavers, you may discover that the supplier's new batch has a slightly different dye color, ruining the aesthetic of your patio. By using our block paving calculator, you can accurately estimate your total unit count and buy the entire batch at once.

How Many Paving Slabs Do I Need?

To manually calculate block paving, you must find the total area of your project, find the area of a single paving slab, and divide the two numbers.

Because most paving bricks are measured in inches, it is mathematically easier to convert your entire project area into square inches rather than square feet.

1. Project Length (in) Project Width (in) = Total Area Sq In

2. Block Length (in) Block Width (in) = Block Area Sq In

3. Total Area Sq In Block Area Sq In = Number of Blocks

Our paving slab calculator performs these conversions for you in the background. Simply enter the size of your patio in feet and the size of your chosen slabs in inches.

Block Paving Cost Calculator & Waste Margins

Because you have to use a wet masonry saw to cut blocks to fit the perimeter edges of your patio, you will inevitably generate waste.

As a general rule, add a 10% waste margin to your order if you are laying the blocks in a simple square or "running bond" pattern. However, if you are laying the pavers in a complex 45-degree diagonal pattern or a herringbone pattern, you must add a 15% waste margin because you will be cutting almost every single block along the borders.

You can also use this tool as a block paving cost calculator by inputting the price per brick from your local supplier. Don't forget to budget for the heavy compacted aggregate base layer and the polymeric sand needed to fill the joints between the blocks.

Paving Estimator FAQ

How many paving slabs do I need?
To find out how many paving slabs you need, calculate the square footage of your patio, then divide by the square footage of a single slab. Always add an extra 10% to account for slabs that must be cut to fit the edges.
How many standard pavers in a square foot?
A standard rectangular paving brick (4-inch by 8-inch) covers 32 square inches. It takes exactly 4.5 standard pavers to cover one square foot of surface area.
How do you calculate block paving?
Calculate the total area in square inches, and divide it by the area of a single block. A 10x10 patio is 14,400 square inches. Divided by a standard 32-square-inch block, you will need 450 blocks (plus waste).
How much does block paving cost?
The blocks themselves typically cost between $3 and $7 per square foot. However, professional installation (including excavation, a compacted gravel base, and polymeric sand joints) usually brings the total cost to $12 to $25 per square foot.
