1. Finding Y% of X
Use Case: Finding out how much a 20% tip is on a $150 bill.
Formula: (Y / 100) × X
(20 / 100) × 150 = 30
2. X is what percent of Y?
Use Case: You scored 30 marks out of a possible 150 on a test. What is your grade percentage?
Formula: (X / Y) × 100
(30 / 150) × 100 = 20%
3. Percentage Change (Increase/Decrease)
Use Case: A stock you bought at $100 is now worth $150. What is your percentage gain?
Formula: ((New Value - Old Value) / Old Value) × 100
((150 - 100) / 100) × 100 = 50% Increase
What does "Percent" mean?
The word "percent" comes from the Latin phrase "per centum", which literally translates to "by the hundred." Therefore, when we say "20 percent," we are literally saying "20 out of every 100."
This is why the number 100 is the denominator in the basic percentage formula. It is a standardized way of expressing ratios and fractions, making it incredibly easy to compare different quantities on a unified scale.
