Plan Your Perfect Garden
Whether you are planting a small backyard raised bed, a large vegetable patch, or a commercial farm row, knowing exactly how many seeds or seedlings to buy is crucial. Buying too few leaves empty, wasted space, while buying too many wastes money.
Our Grow a Garden Calculator (also known as a Plant Spacing Calculator) takes the guesswork out of your spring planting.
How to use the calculator:
- Select your unit: Choose between Imperial (Feet/Inches) or Metric (Meters/Centimeters).
- Enter your garden dimensions: Measure the length and width of the specific area you want to plant. Do not include walking paths.
- Enter the plant spacing: Check your seed packet for the recommended distance between plants.
The calculator will instantly tell you the maximum capacity of your garden based on standard grid-planting techniques.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the correct plant spacing?
The best place to find accurate spacing requirements is on the back of your seed packet or the tag that came with your seedling. Different plants need different amounts of space to grow properly. For example, carrots can be spaced 2-3 inches apart, while tomato plants often need 24-36 inches.
What is grid planting vs. triangular planting?
Grid planting means planting in straight, parallel rows, which is what our calculator estimates by default. Triangular (or staggered) planting offsets every other row, resembling a honeycomb pattern. Triangular planting can often fit about 10-15% more plants into the exact same area.
Should I buy exactly the number of seeds the calculator says?
It is always recommended to buy about 10% to 20% more seeds or seedlings than you strictly need. Seeds don't always germinate perfectly, and young plants can be lost to weather or pests.
Can I use this for raised beds?
Yes! Simply measure the inside dimensions of your raised bed (length and width) and enter them into the calculator.
