Understanding Fraction Math

Fractions are an essential part of mathematics, representing a part of a whole. A fraction consists of a Numerator (the top number indicating how many parts you have) and a Denominator (the bottom number indicating into how many parts the whole is divided).

Addition & Subtraction

When adding or subtracting fractions, the denominators must be exactly the same. If they are different, you must find the Least Common Denominator (LCD). Once the denominators are equal, you simply add or subtract the numerators and leave the denominator unchanged.

(1/4) + (1/4) = 2/4 = 1/2

Multiplication

Multiplying fractions is often considered easier than adding them because you don't need a common denominator. You simply multiply the top numbers together to get your new numerator, and multiply the bottom numbers together to get your new denominator.

(2/3) × (4/5) = 8/15

Division

To divide fractions, you use the "keep-change-flip" method. You keep the first fraction, change the division sign to a multiplication sign, and flip the second fraction (turn it upside down, making it a reciprocal). Then, simply multiply.

(1/2) ÷ (1/4) ➔ (1/2) × (4/1) = 4/2 = 2
