Mastering Pitching Stats

Whether you are tracking stats for your child's little league team, analyzing high school softball, or crunching numbers for your fantasy baseball league, calculating a pitcher's ERA accurately is essential.

Our ERA Calculator automatically handles the tricky "outs-to-decimals" conversion that trips up so many coaches and fans.

How to use the calculator:

  1. Earned Runs Allowed: Enter the total number of runs the pitcher gave up. Do not include unearned runs caused by fielding errors.
  2. Innings Pitched (IP): Enter the innings using standard baseball notation. If they pitched 5 full innings and got 2 outs in the 6th, enter 5.2. The calculator will automatically convert the ".2" into two-thirds of an inning for the math.
  3. Innings Per Game: Select 9 Innings for MLB/Pro baseball, or 7 Innings for standard High School baseball and Softball.

The resulting ERA tells you exactly how many runs this pitcher averages per full game. A lower number means a more dominant pitcher!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Earned Run Average (ERA)?
Earned Run Average (ERA) is the most common statistic used to evaluate a baseball pitcher's performance. It represents the average number of earned runs a pitcher would give up if they pitched a full game (usually 9 innings in MLB).
How do you calculate ERA?
The formula for ERA is: (Earned Runs x Innings per Game) / Innings Pitched. For example, if a pitcher allows 3 earned runs in 6 innings of a 9-inning game, the math is (3 x 9) / 6 = 4.50 ERA.
What is a 'Good' ERA?
In Major League Baseball (MLB), an ERA under 3.00 is considered excellent (often Cy Young Award caliber). An ERA between 3.00 and 4.00 is above average, 4.00 to 4.50 is average, and anything above 5.00 is generally considered poor.
What is the difference between 6.1 and 6.2 Innings Pitched?
In pitching stats, the decimal does not represent tenths. Instead, it represents outs. There are 3 outs in an inning. Therefore, 6.1 means 6 innings and 1 out (which is mathematically 6.333 innings). 6.2 means 6 innings and 2 outs (6.666 innings).
What is an Unearned Run?
An unearned run is a run that scores directly as a result of a fielding error or a passed ball. Because it wasn't the pitcher's fault, unearned runs are NOT included in the ERA calculation.
