Understanding Body Fat vs. BMI

Unlike BMI (Body Mass Index) which only looks at your height and weight, your body fat percentage gives a much clearer picture of your actual health and body composition.

A heavy athlete might be considered "obese" according to BMI because muscle weighs more than fat. However, measuring body fat percentage distinguishes between lean body mass (muscles, bones, water) and fat mass.

Our calculator uses the U.S. Navy Method. Developed by the Department of Defense, it's one of the most accurate ways to measure body fat without expensive clinical equipment. All you need is a flexible tape measure.

How to Take Accurate Measurements

  • Neck: Measure right below the larynx (Adam's apple) while looking straight ahead. Keep the tape flat.
  • Waist (Men): Measure horizontally at the navel (belly button). Don't pull your stomach in.
  • Waist (Women): Measure at the narrowest point of your abdomen, typically halfway between the lowest rib and top of the hip bone.
  • Hips (Women only): Measure at the widest circumference of your hips/buttocks.
