Estimate Your Paving Materials

Whether you are paving a small residential driveway or estimating materials for a commercial parking lot, ordering the correct amount of hot mix asphalt is critical. Asphalt cools quickly, so you cannot afford to order too little, but ordering too much wastes money.

Our Bitumen Calculator uses industry-standard density metrics to convert your flat surface area into the exact tonnage you need to order from the asphalt plant.

How to use the calculator:

  1. Surface Area: Measure the total square meters (m²) of the area you intend to pave.
  2. Thickness: Enter the desired compacted thickness in millimeters (mm). 50mm is standard for residential driveways.
  3. Density: The calculator defaults to 2.35 t/m³, which is the standard density for hot mix asphalt. If your contractor specifies a different mix density, you can adjust this number.

The calculator will output the required weight in Metric Tons. Note: Contractors typically add a 5% to 10% waste factor to this number to account for uneven subgrades and edge spilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Bitumen and Asphalt?
In general construction terms, Bitumen is the sticky, black, highly viscous liquid binder. Asphalt (or Asphalt Concrete) is the finished paving material made by mixing bitumen with crushed rock (aggregates) and sand. People often use the terms interchangeably when talking about paving.
How do you calculate the weight of asphalt needed?
The formula is: Area (in square meters) x Thickness (in meters) x Material Density. The standard density for compacted asphalt concrete is approximately 2.35 to 2.40 tons per cubic meter.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
For a standard residential driveway that only handles cars and light trucks, a compacted asphalt thickness of 40mm to 50mm (about 1.5 to 2 inches) is usually sufficient, provided there is a solid gravel base underneath.
Why do I need to order by the ton?
Unlike concrete which is ordered by volume (cubic yards/meters), asphalt plants batch and sell hot mix asphalt by weight (tons) because it must be compacted to achieve its final density and strength.
